HIMAHEALTH Q&A

Neurological Center

At the Head of Our Class

Over the past 10 years, HIMAHEALTH has invested new resources and energy into our modern Neurological Center. With more physicians, new technology and specialized training, we now offer a much larger scope of treatment for neurological conditions. Our center is composed of board-certified physicians in neurology, neurosurgery, pediatric neurology and neurovascular surgery. These physicians are specialized in different areas of study like pediatrics, neuromuscular conditions and oncology. Additionally, other physicians concentrate on areas such as stroke management, epilepsy surveillance or stereotactic robotic radiosurgery for brain and spine conditions. With this ongoing commitment to excellence, the neurological center at HIMAHEALTH today rivals the best neuro centers in the world.

NEUROLOGY AND PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

Our modern neurology department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system such as behavioral and cognitive syndromes, headache disorders, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, sleep disorders, cerebral palsy, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Lou Gehrig’s disease, speech and language disorders and more. Our comprehensive facilities also include a neurology laboratory, a neurophysiology clinic and a neuro-rehabilitation center.

Electroencephalography (EEG): An electroencephalogram tests electrical activity in the brain. It also tests evoked potentials, visual, auditory, and somato-sensorial (body) activity.

Electromyography (EMG): This is a test that evaluates the health of the muscles and the nerves that control the muscles.

Evoked Potentials: It is a test where brain activity is evaluated based on stimulus to a specific nerve.

Ambulatory Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation: Highly qualified personnel will provide ambulatory services to patients using specialized equipment.

Peripherovascular Doppler: This is a noninvasive exam that evaluates and detects different conditions in the circulatory system of the different extremities.

NEUROSURGERY AND PEDIATRIC NEUROSURGERY

HIMAHEALTH’s neurosurgery department treats conditions of the central, peripheral nervous system and spinal column diseases through invasive and noninvasive treatments. Our U.S. board-certified physicians have studied and trained at the best universities and hospitals worldwide and bring the finest techniques, protocols and technology to this challenging field of medicine. We measure our success along with the finest neurosurgery centers anywhere in the world.

In cases where surgery is indicated, our physicians create a comprehensive map of the individual brain during the work-up using the very latest in imaging and mapping technologies. We use neuro navigators to provide sub-millimeter accuracy in the placement of micro biopsy equipment through pinhole openings. We offer cutting-edge magnetic resonance imaging for typifying tumor masses through spectrographic analysis, giving us the upper hand before we operate. And we employ the 3-dimensional mapping power of tractography, which outlines the nerve paths inside the brain giving us a “roadmap” for safe navigation.

Utilizing modern surgical instrumentation and techniques, our surgeons offer the most appropriate open and vascular surgical repair of the vessels, removal of cancers and correction for abnormalities of the brain. We perform surgeries for stroke, aneurism, cancer and revascularization of penumbra regions. We also feature intraoperative CT imaging for real-time before and after comparison of specific locations during surgery.

And our pediatric neurosurgeons perform miraculous, life-saving procedures on adolescents, children and even neonates. Working meticulously inside the tiny confines of young brains, we are proudly bringing hope and health to the next generation.

Craniectomy: Procedure in which part of the skull is removed to allow a swelling brain room to expand without being squeezed.

Craniotomy: Procedure in which part of the skull, called a bone flap, is removed in order to access the brain.

Hypophysectomy surgical removal of the pituitary gland.

Surgery of Aneurysms, Vascular Malformations or Carotid-cavernous Fistula

Creation of Cerebral Shunt ventriculo-atrial, ventriculo-jugular or ventriculo-auricular: In cases of hydrocephalus, a one-way valve is used to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and carry it to other parts of the body.

Laminectomy: Spine operation to remove the portion of the vertebral bone called the lamina.

Laminotomy: Procedure that removes part of the lamina of the vertebral arch in order to decompress the corresponding spinal cord and/or spinal nerve root).

Foraminotomy: Procedure used to relieve pressure on nerves that are being compressed by the intervertebral foramina.

Brain and Spinal Tumors: Invasive and noninvasive treatments.

Neuro–oncology

Advances in brain imaging along with precise, targeted delivery systems of radiation therapy have positively impacted the treatment of difficult or hard-to-reach tumors of the brain. Both benign and malignant tumors are being effectively eradicated or controlled using radiation, thereby minimizing trauma to the patient. Alone or in combination with other therapies such as chemotherapy and nuclear medicine, radiation therapy provides excellent results in the treatment of neurological cancers.

CyberKnife®

One of the most exciting innovations in the field of oncology, CyberKnife® radiosurgery is a noninvasive radiation treatment that is meticulously precise in delivery of high-dose radiation beams to converge with pinpoint accuracy at tumors within the brain and elsewhere. Even complex-shaped tumors are precisely treated with this painless procedure. CyberKnife also accounts for patient breathing and any movement and makes automatic adjustments during the treatment to maintain a perfect, steady aim.

Some of the many benefits to CyberKnife surgery are treatment of multiple tumors within the brain, no pain, no anesthesia, no bleeding, frameless for patient’s comfort, no recovery period and short periods of treatment with usually one-to-five treatments. Because CyberKnife is so accurate, surrounding tissue is spared, and, if necessary, re-treatment may be an option.
